3 Lighting Tips for the Home

Winter is just about upon us! Which means that it’s getting darker earlier and for longer. To make your rooms feel warm and inviting — without feeling cramped — finding the right home lighting can transform the smallest space.

On the other hand, who doesn’t appreciate lights for the home that make a statement?

Here are a few lighting tips to help make your small room feel bigger –

Use Multiple Light Sources

A single light in a small room can make it feel cramped and uninviting. Instead, use multiple sources to create an illusion of depth and space. For instance, for larger rooms, consider a combination of floor lamps, table lamps, or ceiling lights to distribute light evenly across the room.

To enhance the visual effect, choose lamp shades that complement your room’s décor. If your room has warm, earthy tones, consider shades with warm colours and natural textures. Alternatively, if your room has a modern, minimalist aesthetic, opt for lampshades with clean lines and neutral colours.

As a general rule, if you’re looking for lighting that’s calm, go for soft, ambient lighting at eye level – as opposed to harsh downlights.

Consider your Ceiling Height

The height of your ceiling can significantly impact how it feels.

If you have a low ceiling, it’s best to avoid hanging pendant lights too low, as they can make the room feel smaller — this is especially true for kitchen lighting. Instead, flush-mount ceiling lights or recessed lighting can create the illusion of a higher ceiling.

And the opposite goes for high ceilings, where hanging pendant lights create a cosy and inviting atmosphere.

Our lighting fixtures include pendant lights in various styles, shapes, and sizes. Whether you want a vintage-inspired chandelier or a contemporary pendant light, they have something for every taste and budget.

Experiment with Light Intensity

The intensity of your room’s lighting can significantly impact its ambience. Soft, warm lighting can create a cosy and inviting atmosphere, while bright, cool illumination can make a room feel energising and lively – perfect for your office space lighting.

Test different lamp shades to change the intensity of your room’s lighting. For instance, you can use lamp shades made of Raffia to create a softer, more diffused light. Alternatively, you can opt for opaque shades to create a brighter, more direct light.

With the right lighting techniques and lamp shades from bespoke, you can create a warm, inviting, and spacious atmosphere that you’ll love spending time in.

Sophisticated Spode

Unique home décor in South Africa can often turn to prized possessions with historic meaning.

Whether in person or inside a store, many people have come across ‘traditional looking’ blue and white crockery. This design has been around since the 1700s and is named after its founder, Josiah Spode.

So, let’s deep dive into this unique style and why it seems to have stood the test of time.

What is Spode?

This intricately designed crockery is called Spode.

Spode was founded by Josiah Spode in 1770 in Stoke-on-Trent, England. Stoke-on-Trent was known as the heart of the British pottery industry, and Spode quickly became one of the leading manufacturers of ceramics in the country.

By perfecting the technique for transfer printing – most notably in under-glaze blue on fine earthenware. This ultimately launched the Blue Italian Range, which is still produced today.  In addition to the new glazing techniques, they also helped develop bone china, which is also still in production.

What makes Spode unique?

Attention to detail

One of the things that set Spode crockery design apart is its attention to detail. The designs are known for their intricate patterns and delicate motifs, often inspired by nature or historical events.

Items like the Blue Italian pattern bring an effortless charm and are one of the oldest designs still in production.

Colour use

The designs often feature bold and vibrant hues, such as bright blues, greens, and pinks. However, they’re mostly associated with blue and white. The intention is to create a contrast between the white background and the colours.

They make the perfect piece to add a pop of colour to the kitchen and dining room.

High-quality materials

There is a reason that Spode goods have been around for so long. Aside from the exquisite designs, it’s the delicate fine china and quality of the glazing that adds to the timeless sophistication of the crockery.

While the designs may be traditional, they can still be incorporated into a modern home as elegant pieces. In fact, they have also released more contemporary designs to compliment Scandi style décor of today.

How to Match Neutral Tones and Textures in your Home

Neutral tones palette and textures are a popular choice for many homeowners who are looking to create a modern, sophisticated space.

So, if you’re looking to have this style in your home, it’s important to match tones and textures to create a cohesive look. Let’s explore some tips to elevate your space by matching neutral tones and textures.

#1 Choose a Neutral Palette

The first step in creating a cohesive look is to choose a neutral palette. Neutral tones are colours that don’t draw attention to themselves, such as white, grey, beige, taupe, or ivory. These colours work well on their own or together and provide a foundation that’s easy to work with.

Elements of your space that should be in neutral colours include; furniture, flooring or neutral paint colour accent walls.

#2 Mix Textures

Mixing textures adds dimension and interest to your space and helps break up the monotony of a single-colour scheme. To add depth and interest to a neutral space, mix different textures into smaller areas.

For example; Raffia strip lampshades or metallic floret woven coasters are the perfect way to subtly add texture to your space. Alternatively bigger textures like a thick rattan planter is a blend of natural and textures.

#3 Use Metals and Mirrors

Incorporating metallic accents and mirrors is an excellent way to add a touch of glam and luxury to your space. Mirrors can be used to visually manipulate the size of a room. Metallic décor items reflect light and add shine and sparkle to your home.

Something like this leafy gold mirror ticks all the boxes.

#4 Add Natural Elements

Incorporating natural elements such as wood, stone, or plants can add warmth and depth to your space. Natural elements provide texture and ground the space. So, when you’re shopping for key pieces, think about bringing the outside to the inside.

As an easy first step, plants always boast a beautiful neutral green that works in any space. Alternatively, go with items that are made from natural elements like stone or even look like something natural – like this Urchin Teabag Holder.

If looking after live plants are not your thing, opt for beautiful silk flower arrangements that add gorgeous and colourful natural elements to your space.

3 Tips to Budget for your Wedding

3 Tips to Budget for your Wedding

https://www.bespokehome.co.za/bespokeshop/product/wedding-planner-notebook/

One aspect that’s synonymous with weddings is budget. While a celebration of love shouldn’t have a budgetary restriction, we must also be realistic.

Besides, who wants to start their marriage in debt? No one.

But where there’s a will there’s a way – and there’s always a way to plan a wedding – without spending your life savings.

While it would be incredible to have a personalised wedding planner, that’s unfortunately not a reality for most of us.

However, there are a few key things that you should take into consideration before jumping into planning your wedding.

3 Wedding Budgeting Tips

#1 know your essentials

If there’s one thing that you should take away from this blog it’s this –

Know the cost of your essentials first. While these may differ from person to person, examples include; venue hire, food, bar, marriage officer, staff, furniture (chairs/tables) and attire.

So, a good place to start is to talk with your partner and discuss what is important to you for your wedding. Take note of these ‘non-negotiable’ elements in your wedding planner to keep you on track.

It’s easy to get swept up when planning a wedding. However, if you have a solid foundation of what you’re going to spend your money on, then it’s easy to stay on track.

One thing that we can recommend is this – The only keepsake that you take away from your wedding (besides the memories) are photos. So, be sure to save some budget for a photographer/videographer to capture the day.

#2 ask for all the costs

The wedding industry is worth over a billion Rand. So, definitely don’t assume that when you get a quote that all the costs are included.

Be on the lookout for prospective venues and ask for a quote – and be sure to clarify what is included in the cost and compare it with your essentials (furniture, staff, tables, chairs). This helps you set an overall budget in line with your vision.

Weddings are seasonal

For many places, it’s more affordable to have a wedding in winter (when there’s a lower demand) than in summer (higher demand). So, be sure to compare your top-pick venues with their summer and winter rates.

This goes for flowers too. If you’ve got your heart set on a specific type of flower, be sure to have your wedding at a time when they’re in bloom.

#3 keep a planner

Remember that episode of Friends where Monica has the HUGE wedding binder? Well, we don’t expect you to go that far, but having a place to keep all of your details and ideas is a must.

Depending on the size of your wedding, it’s a lot of information to take in – and you’ll most likely be meeting a lot of vendors as well.

So, we recommend having a digital spreadsheet for budgets and a paper/book planner that you can take with you to your meetings.

Inside your planner, you can not only keep ideas and inspiration but also your table plan,

bonus tip | be prepared to compromise

You don’t want to start your new marriage in debt. So, compromise. If something is out of your budget but considered essential, then you have to cut back on something else.

Opt to buy a wedding dress instead of having a custom one made? Fantastic!

Forget a vintage car! Go for a trusted friend or family member to drive you.

Perhaps forgo a seated table plan and have a cocktail/tapas meal instead?

Choose wedding decorations on a budget that you can use in your home after the big day.

All of these little changes can help you cut costs and save for the things that you really want for your wedding.

5 Reasons you Need a Gift Registry

Are you tying the knot soon? Wouldn’t you love it if every gift you opened was exactly what you wanted?

Well, who wouldn’t?

You might think that having a gift registry is an old-school practice, but it’s really not. Having a gift registry means that you can take your time to select items that you really want for your home – without having to physically go to a store.

As a business that specialises in giving the perfect gift, we can confidently say that we know what we’re talking about.

Here are our 5 reasons you need a gift registry

      1. Guests can give with confidence

Take the guesswork out of shopping for your guests. By providing them with a carefully curated list of your favourites, you can save yourself the back and forth of having to return gifts.

Whether it’s a perfect serve whiskey decanter or that Nordic non-stick frying pan – guests can give confidently.

      2.  Saves time

Your guests don’t have to dash to the busy store to buy you a gift. They can shop online and have your gift delivered straight to their door. Bespokehome.co.za offers an exceptionally unique range of gifts and accessories for the home.

You won’t find these in a regular store –  Elka Duvet cover or this Oak serving and storing rack.

      3. No duplicates

Weddings can be stressful – and when it’s over the last thing you feel like doing is returning/exchanging duplicate gifts – so, eliminate that completely. A Bespoke Gift Registry means that your items are exact and when they’re bought, they’re no longer available on the registry.

While you can have more than one of these Nature lanterns, too many would be overkill.

       4. Take the pressure off your wedding planner

Whether you have a professional planner or it’s you, having a gift registry means it’s one less thing you have to worry about. Guests can easily refer to your Bespoke Registry without having to contact you or your planner directly.

Why not add this gorgeous Silhouette Storage Jar to your registry?

      5. It’s easy to set up

All you need to do is log on to Bespokehome.co.za, and create an account.

Then, pour your favourite drink, snuggle up with your fiancé and start choosing your gifts from our curated list of products on our website.

How do we know?

Bespokehome.co.za is an online store that offers carefully curated home décor items to all of our loved customers. However, we started as a gift registry-only business – and grew from there.

3 Reasons To Choose Faux Flower Arrangements

Artificial flowers have a bad reputation. When others talk about fake flowers, they’re probably thinking about those dusty, unrealistic, almost lime-green  specimens that adorn a magician’s costume.

However, when we talk about them, we’re talking about art.

For a lack of a better phrase, faux plants and flowers are simply fabulous and have come a long way since their plastic, pointy predecessors. In fact, here are our top 3 reasons to choose an artificial flower arrangement.

#1 They look real & cost-effective

Who doesn’t love a beautiful mixed hydrangea arrangement in full bloom? These realistic silk flowers are expertly handcrafted to look exactly like the real thing. In addition, if you want the full visual and the scent of your flowers, Bespoke Home also offers fragrance gift sets – which is actually a diffuser.

People who love plants in their home know that there’s just something about them that brightens up your place. However, we know that unless you have a healthy garden that’s in full bloom throughout the year, buying flowers can become quite costly – fast.

So, faux flower arrangements are the ideal solution. Not only are you saving money, but you’re also getting the flowers (and scent!) you want – and no one will know the difference.

#2 Last forever & low maintenance

Any flower enthusiast can tell you that it’s slightly heartbreaking having to throw away that beautiful arrangement when it expires.

So why do it, when you can have them forever?

Say goodbye to changing questionable, smelly water, trimming off dead leaves and drooping petals. With silk flowers, your gorgeous bouquet is always at its brightest and looking its best.

You can also breathe life into your home through faux plants and living walls. It’s like all-year-round greenery with low to almost zero maintenance.

When we handcraft our spectacular arrangements, we include a glass vase that not only suits the bouquet but makes it look even more realistic.

#3 Perfect for anyone

People and pets can be severely allergic to flowers and pollens. Now, imagine you visit a new friend with a magnificent bouquet – only to hear that they can’t accept it or worse – break out in hives in front of you.

Well, that’s a bit awkward.

Silk flowers are a brilliant gift idea. Not only do they last forever, but also have no seasonal restrictions and (most importantly) are beautiful, and the recipient doesn’t run the risk of having to reach for their EpiPen.

It sounds dramatic, but it’s definitely something to think about.

How to clean faux flowers

Aside from the impeccable craftsmanship and beauty, these flowers are super easy to clean. Sure, these plants are fake, but everything collects dust and if left unattended, that dust can translate into grime, mould or simply looking off colour.

There are two methods you can use to clean your faux flowers, namely dry and wet –

  • Dry – Dust your silk flowers regularly for a light clean to remove build up.
  • Wet – Deep cleaning with water, vinegar or hairspray if you’re pressed for time.

Ideally, you should be dusting your plants at least once or twice a week to keep them looking fabulous. Furthermore, depending on the environment that they’re in, you can wet clean your plants every 6 months.

Every season is flower season

From hydrangeas and white tulips to Proteas or Pink Peony’s, your favourite flower is always in season and always available. Bespoke Home boasts a wide range of exquisite silk flowers that can simply take your breath away. Easy to clean, lovingly crafted and made to last.

10 Things Covid-19 Has Taught Us About Weddings

The pandemic had a marked effect on the wedding industry. The events of the past two years have forced everyone to re-evaluate the way we approach these special events. From suppliers to engaged couples there have been many learnings that are still relevant even as the industry returns to normal. From what constitutes a suitable venue to how we plan and adapt to unforeseen circumstances, there is so much Covid-19 has taught us, and while there have been many challenges, we see this as an opportunity to take stock of how we approach things. This article explores some of these learnings, both positive and negative and we hope that it can help you get the most out of your special day.

Number 1: Bigger Isn’t Always Better

One of the most stressful aspects of wedding planning is deciding on the guest list. Who makes the cut, and who gets cut? Do you invite that aunt you met once when you were five years old, and never saw again? The weddings that did take place during the pandemic often featured greatly reduced guest lists, with just the most essential people present. While there is a lot to be said for large-scale weddings, a smaller wedding also has its advantages. They are more affordable, more intimate, and far easier to plan.

Number 2: Second Time Around

The wedding dress is one of the most archetypal aspects of any wedding ceremony, and finding the right one that fits your body, and your budget can be one of the most challenging parts of wedding planning. With smaller weddings becoming the norm in the pandemic, more brides than ever are choosing pre-loved wedding dresses. Because it is an item you wear once, there are many boutiques who specialise in this, and the large variety means you can still find one that matches your vision.

Number 3: Read The Fine Print

While there shouldn’t be anymore Covid restrictions in the immediate future, one very expensive lesson many couples were forced to learn related to cancellations. Not just for venues, but for honeymoons and other forms of wedding-related travel. While everyone wants their wedding to be a perfect day, free of stress and worry, this is seldom the case, and it really pays to look into the policies of your venue and suppliers to make sure you have security if something unforeseen happens.

Number 4: Marriage Is A Journey, Not A Destination

Probably the biggest lesson to come out of the pandemic for couples was the need for compromise. It is one thing to have a clear vision for your perfect day and something completely different to refuse to take reality into account. While the nature of compromises may be different now, the principles of listening to your partner and taking their opinions and feelings into account are universal and are good preparation for life after your big day.

Number 5: There Are Only Two People Who Are Essential

At the end of the day a wedding is about the union of two people who love each other and have chosen to spend the rest of their lives together. Everything else is gravy. It doesn’t matter if it is over zoom, or in a church with 500 guests, the meaning of the day for those two people is not diminished.

Number 6: Start Early

Like many of the things on this list this was born of necessity but will probably become a feature of many weddings going forward. Traditional weddings start in the afternoon and last late into the evening. And while this time frame allows for attendees to experience a ceremony followed by a night of food, wine, and dance, it does mean that only certain venues can accommodate you and that costs can quickly ramp up. During the pandemic, many couples chose to have their wedding earlier in the day and have a more relaxed after-party with close friends and family. Not only does this keep costs down, but also prevents your drunk uncle from trying to keep the dance floor open when the venue is ready to close. Be sure to stay on top of your wedding planning with our Wedding Planner Notebook.

Number 7: Perfect Venue

Following on from the point above, the pandemic also allowed many couples to consider alternative venues. With churches and wine farms being off-limits and many traditional venues shutting down temporarily, many couples started looking for alternative venues. Places like restaurants, gardens of friends and even the beach became the new go-to venues and allowed for weddings that were unique and memorable.

Number 8: Don’t Compromise On Your Photographer

This article is largely about deciding what is essential and what is nice to have. However, one service provider you shouldn’t compromise on is the photographer. No matter the scale, venue, time, or catering choices you make, the memories of your special day are ones you would want to keep forever. Having someone who can capture your day beautifully is still a wedding must-have.

Number 9: Paperless Weddings

The wedding invitation is one of those traditions that we take for granted. It is a lovely touch that brings a tactile dimension to your big day. But even before the pandemic, we saw the rise of online invitation services. There are many good reasons for this, not least of which is the ability to instantly send your invitation to everyone who needs to get it without the danger of it getting lost in the mail and organise your guest list and registry through these applications, which brings us to our next lesson.

Number 10: A Wedding Registry Is Still The Best Way To Prepare For Newlywed Life

No matter the size or cost of your wedding, a wedding gift registry is still an essential part of the planning process. Even if your guest list is smaller, or your destination is out of town, many people will still want to give you something to show their joy at your union, and a registry let’s you guide friends and family towards the things you need. It is a great bonding tool for bride and groom as you start the journey of your ever after together. Visit our Wedding Gift Registry to start planning your special day.

Scented Candles – A Celebration of the Senses

One of the consequences of COVID – 19 is that many of us will be spending more time at home than we usually would. And while this comes with many challenges, such as staving off cabin fever, or trying to find new ways to entertain the kids, it also provides us with an opportunity to evaluate our spaces in new ways. It is more evident than ever that our homes really are the ultimate safe spaces – a place where we can feel relaxed; hide out from the world; and spend quality time with our loved ones.

Every Home is Different

Every home is filled with a unique combination of shapes, colours, sounds and smells that make it special. However even if you don’t consider décor at all, every home is made unique by the people who live in it. Whether it is a family or a lone person, it is the individuals who make a house, a home. While all the senses are important we wanted to focus on one of the most powerful for building memories and making the space your own. The sense of smell. A home contains many scents, such as the aroma of a cooked meal or from the flowers from the garden. Every home is the sum of these scents to create one that is wholly unique.

This is beautifully illustrated by the experience of visiting a new space for the first time, you will pick up on a new and unique smell, and it will become more familiar as you spend more time there.

For this article we wanted to focus in on this most powerful sense, so closely tied to security, memories and emotions.

Why use scented candles and diffusers?

This may seem like a rhetorical question after all scented candles are there to bring pleasant scents into your space. And while this is obviously true it is only the beginning. A scented candle or diffuser is about more than just a pleasant smell. They evoke memories; they allow a home to feel warmer and more welcoming; they allow you to show your loves or personality in a subtle and non–intrusive way. This last point is particularly relevant when you consider the wide range of scents available. You can pick a candle to show your favourite flower, or if you are the outdoorsy type to bring some of the natural world into your home. The possibilities are as endless as there are different candles.

Scented candles and diffusers are also a great way to not only augment the smell of your home, but also a great way to mask unpleasant odours such as pet messes, child messes or tobacco smells.

A scent for every home

At Bespoke Home we are constantly on the lookout for classic and novel scented candles and diffusers to add to our collection. We recognise that these items are one of the simplest and easiest ways to improve the aura of your home. These candles are not only beautifully scented, but they look really stylish and sophisticated as well.

The Stoneglow Luna Candles and Luna Diffusers are primarily focused on organic notes with fragrant woods and exotic flowers featured prominently across their range. Here you will find interesting combinations such as Leather and Saffron or Ylang Ylang and Amber.

Also featured from Stoneglow we have the more modern and trendy Urban Botanicals Candles and diffusers which plays with tropical and summer fruit aromas to create a true feast for the senses. In this range you will find beautifully balanced combinations such as Papaya Watermelon and Pineapple Pomelo.

Stoneglow’s Modern Classic Candles and diffusers feature bold natural scents and are intended to evoke memories of different times. Here powerful scents such as sea salt or musk form the body and are beautifully juxtaposed with subtle floral notes.

You could also try our frangipani-scented Porcelain Flower Bud Candles. Not only do these little candles trigger all sorts of memories with their iconic floral scent, but they are a feast for the eyes too.

Finally, something a little different. While wine and candles are almost a cliché, what if a product combined these two concepts into one? The Rosso Nobile Decanter Diffuser features a novel design which mimics the shape of a wine decanter. The Rosso Nobile scent conjures up the smell of Tuscan wines with sweet and fruity notes of grapes and berries, the soft notes of violet, magnolia and birch.

We hope we’ve given you something to think about when it comes to introducing new scents to your home. There is one final reason why scented candles should be high up on your shopping list and that is the uniquely South African problem of load shedding, so the next time you’re forced to light a candle, why not pick one that makes your home smell beautiful.

Alfresco Dining

Celebrate Spring with Alfresco Dining

The phrase “alfresco” is borrowed from the Italian phrase meaning “in the cool air” and the name really goes a long way in defining what an alfresco dining experience is all about. The phrase comes from the Mediterranean where the cool evenings and nights provide a respite from the heat of spring or summer. Many restaurants and cafés will pull tables out onto the sidewalk to take advantage of the cooler temperatures and guests are often entertained by street performers and buskers creating a celebratory atmosphere.

Spring harvest foods, an outside setting and a generally festive atmosphere are the core tenants that define an alfresco experience, so as long as you have those covered, you’re halfway there. However, creating a truly memorable event is all about appealing to sight, sound, taste, smell and touch to create a total sensory experience that will be etched into your guest’s memory for weeks (and even months) to come.

An Alfresco setting is a celebration of all things spring and summer and lends itself beautifully to the principle of a feast for all the senses.

A FEAST FOR YOUR EYES

The shift from afternoon to evening is an essential factor when it comes to planning the table setting of your alfresco experience. Your table setting needs to seamlessly flow from daytime to night-time mirroring the atmosphere of the party. This means that lights, candles and lanterns should be a central consideration, helping to create the right ambiance as the sun goes down.

Since alfresco is a celebration of nature think wooden textures and soft linens, little touches that bring a tactile feeling of nature to the table. Another important consideration is how food will be presented. With many diverse dishes on the table you might want to look at cake stands and large bowls to beautifully present the different dishes.

TASTE THE HARVEST

While we’re on the topic of food, the focus should be on dishes that are light, fresh and bite size. Think tapas, salads and cheeses. Everything from cheeses to dessert can be brought out at once to create a feast for the eyes. While bread has always been a staple of the alfresco table, you could instead offer some more on trend grains such as quinoa which offer a healthier option. This type of spread is all about options. With alfresco dining your guests can decide what to eat, how much to eat and when. It also saves you the trouble of having to consider your guest’s dietary requirements as they can simply eat what appeals to them and skip the rest. If you are looking for some specific recipe ideas there are some great recipes online that can help spark some ideas.

Another important consideration is cocktails. Nothing says spring quite like a statement glassware filled with a delicious drink. Liven up the traditional Gin and Tonic by adding some fresh fruit. A great example of this is the Strawberry & Black Pepper G&T. Champagne is also a great for spring days, helping to further enhance the festive atmosphere you have created.

MUSIC TO YOUR EARS

Because a festive atmosphere is such an important part of creating an alfresco dining experience, one of the most important considerations for setting the tone is the music. The temptation might be to go full Mediterranean with Café Del Mar or something similar, but this is missing the point. An alfresco experience is about creating an environment that is both relaxing and festive for your guests. You need to consider that these events will often move from the afternoon into the evening and the music needs to complement these different stages of alfresco dining. Obviously, the exact choice of soundtrack will depend on your personal taste and the taste of your guests, but the idea of keeping it light, positive and upbeat will always be relevant. If the task of playlisting your party sounds daunting, don’t worry, Bose has you covered.

THE SCENT OF SPRING

They say scent is closely linked to long term memories, so if you are creating a memorable event don’t ignore this important sense. Your table will feature the aromas of some great and nostalgic dishes, but there are a few other ways to tantalise your guests sense of smell.

The scent of fresh fruit whether it be on the table or in a cocktail really help build the summery feelings associated with alfresco dining. Another great way of bringing fresh fruit to your table is to integrate it into your table decor with pieces such as this monkey bowl, bringing pops of bright colour and an overarching feeling of spring. And speaking of flowers, every alfresco table needs a bit of floral magic, such as these incredible silk flowers which are a great way to bring that spring feeling to the table.

A TOUCH OF NATURE

An alfresco dining experience is a celebration of the outdoors and consequently natural textures such as soft linen napkins, summer fruits or wooden finishes are a very important part of creating the right atmosphere. There are many ways to bring these touches of nature to your table. They can take the form of platters or jugs that pop with natural colour; or simple linen tablecloths and napkins that provide a tactile connection to the harvest table. However, one of the most practical ways to bring wooden textures to your table setting is with wooden serving boards. Not only do cheese accessories beautifully complement a spring’s afternoon from a culinary perspective, but they also bring these natural textures to your table without it feeling forced.

The celebratory nature of alfresco dining make it the perfect type of event for end of year parties and business/networking events. Where an informal table seated dinner can naturally and organically shift into a party. If we could give one pro tip it’s to remember that your guests will be spending a lot of time in the sun. It is very important that you provide enough shade for everyone, and also to ensure that your guests stay hydrated. Keeping with the spring theme fruit infused waters are a great way to ensure your guests are able to enjoy your party late into the night.

Unique Wedding Gifts

Unique Wedding Gifts

Weddings have changed in the past decade and as a result, so have wedding registries. Gone are the days of stock standard cookie cutter gifts. These days a wedding registry should focus on a couple’s unique tastes and give guests a chance to get a gift they truly believe reflects the bride and groom’s personalities. But finding these unique gifts for brides & grooms is easier said than done. Firstly, you need to find the registry that is the best fit for you. It either needs an extensive range that allows you to pick and choose the right items, or fill your niche perfectly.

Bespoke Home definitely falls into the former category and we pride ourselves in showcasing a range that not only provides the tried and true classics like linen and silverware, but also curating more eclectic items that can help bring that touch of individuality that will make your registry feel one-of-a-kind.  Below we’ve shared some of our favourite unique gift ideas from our showroom, why not see if any spark your imagination.

CONVERSATION PIECES

These are the pieces that stand out in any room or setting. Conversation pieces are just that, items so interesting they start conversations. These can be bright, unusual, beautiful and visually striking, but what ties them together is they will grab people’s attention. Maybe you need the Dolce & Gabbana Kettleto be the star of your kitchen? Maybe you are looking at something more artisanal like this Ardmore Tea Towelfrom the foothills of the Drakensburg; or this Banana Leaf Salad Bowlfrom the studio of Bordallo Pinheiro in Portugal? Maybe your room is missing that standout printor your coffee tableis feeling a bit ordinary? These pieces have been chosen because they bring that something special to a room or table, and speak to the unique work of the designer.

HANDMADE

Another type of unique gift are handmade items. Any gift that is made by hand will have slight differences that make it one-of-a-kind in a way that you will never get from mass produced items. These can be items that are hand painted like the intricate work on this Multi Serving Bowlwhich is hand painted and fired in a small pottery studio in Portugal; or these Hand-painted Coasterswhich are created exclusively for Bespoke Home. Or they could be hand crafted, as seen in these Animal-lidded Ceramicsfrom Namibia. Or handwoven, like the beautiful Porcupine Basketsfrom Zimbabwe. We strive to seek out local and international artisans that are creating beautiful and unique things with their hands.

CLASSIC WITH A TWIST

These pieces take the classic and expected and add unique touches and twists to create standout décor items. Instead of the more expected white towels, why not pick a colourful Itawuli Bath Sheetfrom Mungo with its bold, warm design inspired by Xhosa prints. Instead of ordinary salad spoons, get the stunning Acacia Salad Spoonswith their unique organic shape. Or a twist on the traditional chopping board, which features brass inlaysas a design touch. These little touches of beauty in everyday things help make the world less mundane. They can be things you use every day like a Highball Glassor something for special occasions like this napkin with a printyou would consider framing. You’ll still find the classics in our range, they are classic gifts for a reason, but if you want something that’s equal parts practical and beautiful, gifts such as the ones above tick all the right boxes.

THE NEW WAVE

Our final category is what we like to call the new wave. Technology is more and more present in our everyday lives and it makes sense that couples are picking electronic items for their registry. It would have been almost unthinkable for our grandparents to ask for a record player for their wedding, but those days are well and truly gone. The modern registry has a plethora of technological items aimed at making your lives more comfortable. There are luxurious items for almost every room in the house from a sleek Black Air Fryerfor the kitchen to Ceramic Towel Heatersfor the bathroom. We even have some tech gifts that can be in any room you want. While electronics as gifts might feel a little cold appliances and technological conveniences can add so much to a home and every registry should have them in the mix.

We intended this article to showcase some of the more unique wedding gifts in our range. Whether they are unique in design, execution, concept or even just something you wouldn’t usually think about. The Bespoke Home range is all about constant curation so if you’ve seen something unique that you think would make the perfect gift for you or someone you know, email usand maybe we will add it to our range.

South African Wedding Gifts

When it comes to selecting wedding gifts for your registry the world is your oyster and while the temptation may be there to fill your registry with aspirational overseas brands like Le Creuset or Bohemia Crystal, there is something to be said for looking a little closer to home. At Bespoke Home we pride ourselves in curating the finest local and international brands, and what we’ve found is that the quality and craftsmanship of some of our local suppliers is comparable to and even surpasses many of the established international brands. So in the spirit of supporting local craft, let’s take a look at some of our favourite South African wedding gift suppliers from our catalogue.

ABODA

From fine porcelain with gilded finishes to a range of cutlery inspired by indigenous Southern African flora, Aboda’s work is a lasting symbol of fine South African craftsmanship. Forms, textures and shapes are captured in their subtle beauty and translated into highly functional pieces that feel unique and contain their own individual beauty. By drawing their inspiration from the nature of South Africa, these pieces possess a unique sense of place while still being able to stand out on any table around the world.

GEMMA ORKIN

Gemma Orkin produces ceramics quite unlike anything else out there. Her range of bowls, platters and jugs feature whimsical illustrations, which draw on her background as a fine art print maker and bring the skills she learned at UCT’s Michaelis School of Fine Art to the world ceramics. She has been making ceramics for over 25 years and still to this day every item in her range is still made from scratch completely by hand. Gemma loves the surprise that comes from opening the kiln to see what she has created, and her ceramics continue to delight and surprise her customers.

Founded by Irma van Rooyen, Kaross serves as a way of bringing sustainable opportunities for mainly rural women to make a living. Inspired by the embroidery of Tsongo men and women Kaross allows rural African women with an outlet for their traditional skills and as a consequence uplifts and empowers these communities. At Bespoke we stock a range of their gorgeous scatter cushions featuring a mix of prints and designs.

LAID BACK CO.

If you’ve ever ordered a cheeseboard at a top local wine estate or restaurant there is a good chance the board it was served on was manufactured by Laid Back Co. While all their cheeseboards, cake stands and cutlery trays are manufactured by local artisans in their own production facilities, they have expanded to serve clients in Australia, Austria, Belgium, Germany the British Virgin Islands and Singapore. They emphasise quality and durability and their raw materials include both weathered American oak as well as recycled French oak.

MUNGO

Mungo is a textile brand with a difference. While globally the textile industry has moved into a space where economies of scale and high production volumes are valued over quality Mungo was founded with the exact opposite approach in mind. Founded 20 years ago by master weaver Stuart Holding, Mungo started with two restored antique looms, taking the making of textiles back to a place where craftsmanship was valued above all else. The philosophy paid off and soon demand outstripped production. They now manufacture a fantastic selection of towels, gowns, linen and much, much more.  Since 1998 Mungo has expanded to 3 stores nationwide and have opened their own Mill. While their business has grown, their commitment to artisanal craft remains.

THE COTTON COMPANY

It was while she was living in Istanbul that The Cotton Company founder Madeleine Hugo first fell in love with the quality and traditional craftsmanship associated with Turkish towels. When she returned to South Africa it was with the vision of bringing this small taste of Turkish hospitality to the South African market. The towels are 100% eco-friendly and are still manufactured by the same family of artisans she met in Turkey all those years ago. The designs have been hand-picked by Madeleine herself to reflect South African tastes. If you’re looking to add a touch of indulgence to your registry you can’t go wrong with one of their towels, throws or hand towels.

We hope you’ve enjoyed this journey through South African design featured in our store. We are always on the lookout for new and exciting South African wedding gift brands that embody the spirit of quality and craftsmanship. If you have any suggestions of brands you think will be a good fit for our gift registry, mention them in the comments below.

Bars to Braais: Wedding Gift Ideas for Him

Few would argue against the fact that the wedding industry as a whole shows a bias towards the bride. This is understandable, grooms to be may be less interested in things such as flowers or décor, while a bride has been dreaming about it her whole life. One area where you can really have fun planning together is the wedding gift registry. It’s a chance to share your ideas for the future and to explore the lifestyles you envision as a couple. However, most registries fall into the same trap as the rest of the wedding industry, with the majority of gifts aimed at the bride to be. To help redress this imbalance we’ve put together a collection of “B for Bridegroom” themed wedding gift ideas just for the boys.

Bar

Whether it’s hanging with the bros in the man cave, or a dinner party with friends or family, no man should be without the tools he needs to entertain in style. As couples shift from going out on the town to dinners at home, the home bar provides an important bridge between these worlds. Provide ice in a leather bound Ice bucket with matching tongs; pour single malt from a square top whiskey decanter; or bring a touch of fun to the party by shaking up a cocktail. A well-stocked and well-equipped bar is the mark of a sophisticated and cultured gentleman.

Bites

If you’re instead the kind of guy that goes full Gordon Ramsay the minute you step into the kitchen, you will love this next set of items focussed on male culinary pursuits. No home chef’s arsenal is complete without a proper chef’s knife, and splashing out for a high quality one is an investment that will pay off for years to come, especially if you keep the edge sharp with a classic knife sharpener. What could be manlier than sharpening your own knives?

Be the host with the most and expand your entertainment possibilities for both friends and family. Impress your in-laws at Sunday lunch as you perfectly carve the roast; create your own minced meat for your signature hamburger patty at a Saturday braai; or serve up perfectly sliced, artisanal pizza that will blow your guests away.

Beats

And while we’re on the subject of entertainment what is a dinner party without music? Electronics may not be the first thing couples think of when creating a registry, but they are a central part of modern married life. Our wireless and Bluetooth speakers let you take the music with you from room to room.

Brews

Round off the evening, or start the next morning with the perfect cup of coffee. If you’re the kind of guy who knows their Americano from their macchiato then you would love a high quality espresso maker. An item like this is a true investment and if you’re a coffee lover you almost can’t put a price on having great coffee at your fingertips. If you aren’t quite at the level of enthusiast, but still love your morning coffee, you can’t go wrong with a copper French press for the perfect cup without the effort.

Braai

Cooking with fire is as old as human history. It’s in our blood and it’s no wonder that even today, the braai is regarded as a bastion of manliness. The most essential ingredients of an impressive braai area is, of course, the braai itself, but that’s really just the beginning. Having the right tools for starting the fire, handling the meat and maintaining the braai make weekend afternoons at the braai a pleasure.

You can also look at braai accessories to broaden your repertoire; allowing you to cook a wider array of dishes on the fire. Items like a reversible grill or a poultry roaster give you more options and allow you to get creative at the grill.

We hope this article has given you some ideas for creating a registry that excites both partners. After all, creating a wedding registry should be a fun, collaborative part of planning your wedding; an opportunity for you and your partner to bond as you visualise your future together. It’s a chance to take stock of what you already have, and see what you still need to live your best life together.

5 Tips For Building Your Dream Registry

Deciding what gifts to select for your wedding registry can either be really fun or really daunting depending on how you approach it. And the truth is it’s different for every single couple. A wedding registry should be a reflection of you, your fiancé and the things you love. So while we may not be able to tell you exactly what you should select, we can share some secrets and tips that might make the process a little bit easier for you. Below you can find some insights from our experience in helping engaged couples create their dream registry.

Do It Together

Your wedding registry is a vision board, a visualisation of your future home and life. This means that a good registry should reflect the couple who made it. For this reason, it’s important to get your fiancé involved and create a wedding registry that speaks to both of your needs.  By taking stock of what both of you already have and together deciding what you still need in your life, you’re not only laying the first building blocks of the future you’ve planned together, but you’re selecting the objects that will feature in the special moments you share in the years to come.

Think of the Future

And while we’re on the subject of tomorrow, it’s a fact that our tastes and needs change as we get older, what we love today we might not like tomorrow… life happens and priorities change. It’s important to not only think about what you need today, but also, what you will need tomorrow. Right now that 8-piece dinner set might seem unnecessary, but when you start hosting more dinner parties or your family starts to grow, they become essential. The same can be said for kitchenware, one piece of advice we often give couples is to build your registry around the type of cooking you want to do in the future.

Look for Heirlooms

When selecting gifts nothing is more important than quality. Selecting a gift registry that offers carefully curated and high quality items ensures that they will be a fixture in your life in the years to come. Even smaller or simpler gifts that are of a high quality will create value in your life. For instance a designer bottle opener will be something you will keep and use for years. Fine china will always be a conversation piece at dinner parties and if it’s high quality it becomes something that you can pass down to your children when they start making their home.

Go for the Wild Card

Your wedding gift registry is a chance to pick the gifts you really want. While it’s important to think practically, you also need to listen to your heart. If there’s something you have your heart set on, whether it’s a dream appliance or a piece of designer furniture our advice is to add it to your list. An Espresso maker might seem like an unusual item for a wedding registry, but if you are a coffee lover there really are few better gifts.

Browse Dream Appliances

Give Options

While it’s important to be selective and act as a curator for your tomorrow, it’s just as important to be mindful of the varied situations and budgets of your guests. A wedding registry that only contains expensive or high end items might place unnecessary strain on your guests. It’s important to find a balance between more expensive and smaller practical items that you will use every day.

Building your dream wedding registry should be one of the most fun and satisfying parts of planning your wedding. It should be collaborative and fun for you and your fiancé. Perhaps the most important part of the process is selecting a gift registry that carefully selects and curates the items it has available. By hand selecting items that speak to the values of good craftsmanship and brands that have built a reputation for inherent quality you can be sure that whatever you select, will be a fixture in your lives for years to come.
